Award program

CMA Awards

The CMA Awards are a peer-voted Country Music Association honor recognizing achievement across twelve artist, songwriter, musician, recording and music-video categories.

Eligibility is category-specific. CMA Professional voting membership governs nomination and voting participation; it is not a universal requirement for the artist or work to be eligible. MAC does not publish an expired eligibility-period date as current public guidance.

Eligibility requirements

Key conditions that can affect whether a work or category is eligible.

  • Target a qualifying Country category

    Official

The main CMA Awards categories recognize Country artists, works and contributions according to the specific criteria for each category.

Why it matters: Actual eligibility must be evaluated at the category level, not through a single generic release rule.

Submission and participation

How entry, deadlines, membership, or participation work for this program.

  • CMA peer nomination and voting

    Official

CMA Awards nominees and winners are determined through the CMA member ballot process rather than a general artist self-entry process.

Why it matters: This describes participation mechanics and never counts toward artist/work readiness.

  • Professional membership controls voting participation

    Official

Only CMA Professional voting members receive CMA Awards voting privileges. This membership rule governs who participates in the ballots, not whether an artist or work is itself award-eligible.

Why it matters: Keep voting qualification separate from category eligibility.

Music Awards Center recommendations

Practical preparation guidance from Music Awards Center. These are recommendations, not official award requirements.

  • Review the exact target-category criteria

Assess each CMA target against its own official criteria rather than a generic CMA checklist.

Common submission mistakes

Music Awards Center guidance on what commonly trips up submissions — not official requirements.

  • Treating CMA membership as artist eligibility
  • Applying Single of the Year chart criteria to other categories
  • Applying release-window rules to people-based categories
  • Turning judging factors into mandatory blockers
